Why is contact information hidden in some WHOIS results?

Many domain registrars offer WHOIS privacy protection, which replaces the registrant's personal information with the registrar's proxy details. This is standard practice since GDPR and other privacy regulations.

Can I use this to check if a domain is available?

Indirectly. If the WHOIS lookup returns no data, the domain may be unregistered. However, for definitive availability checks, use your registrar's search tool.
